Goal of “the Archives of Infectious Diseases History (AIDH)” Project

The main purpose of “the Archives of Infectious Diseases History (AIDH)” Project is to collect the basic materials of the infectious diseases, parasitic diseases and local diseases and to offer these materials to the person who are interested in these research fields such as tropical medicine, parasite studies, and global health.

If we discuss on malaria, its impact was very important in the world history including Japan. Malaria was also prevalent in Hokkaido. And, Plasmodium falciparum was also prevalent at Sakishima islands such as Yaeyama and Miyako, the southwest islands of Japan.

The anti-malaria campaign was tried in many districts in Japan, but it is very difficult to control before WW2. In the period of WW2, many people including children were dead in Yaeyama by malaria, because of the forced-evacuation, and it is called “War Malaria”.

After WW2, the United States Military Forces started anti-malaria campaign in Okinawa including Yaeyama and Miyako by the vector control of the DDT spraying. It is very important and interesting issue, the success of malaria control was due to the mosquito control by the DDT spraying or the effort of local communities to join the anti-malaria campaign. The Japanese experience of malaria control is very good lesson to the many districts where malaria is still prevalent.

Cases of the 20th century Japan was very successful to control infectious diseases such as malaria, lymphatic filariasis and schistosomiasis. And then, the Japan Association of Parasite Control played a very important role to control many kinds of parasitic diseases in Japan after the WW2.

The Japanese experience is the very important lesson to control infectious disease in the world history, but the basic materials were spoiled after the elimination of diseases. Kyoto and Hikone of Shiga were the famous places of malaria prevalence in Japan. After WW2, Japanese scientists, administration staffs, and local people paid much attention to control malaria with the United States Army in these districts, but the basic materials including the documents, reports and photos were almost destructed. The Hikone case is the very good lesson to control malaria in the contemporary research field of global health. The case of lymphatic filariasis and schistosomiasis also are very important lessons.

“The Archives of Infectious Diseases History” Project is to collect the basic materials of infectious diseases, parasitic diseases and local diseases and to offer these materials to the person who are interested in related research fields. The following materials are available now,

  • The epidemiological data of malaria, lymphatic filariasis and schistosomiasis.
  • The materials of the scientists such as Komiya Yishitaka and Ohtsuru Masamitsu, whose major were parasitic disease studies and tropical medicine.
  • The records of oral interviews with many scientists conducted to control infectious diseases including foreign scholars.
  • The basic materials of the Japanese Association of Parasite Control.
  • The materials to control infectious diseases in China, Taiwan, Korea and Philippines related to the Japanese anti-diseases campaign.
  • The miscellaneous materials with the project.

To collect, keep and secure the basic materials is the main purpose of this project, it means the historicalization of Japanese experience on the infectious diseases control. “The Archives of Infectious Diseases History” is not still popular now, but we paid much attention to the materials and historicalization of the rich experiences. Thank you very much for your understanding and need your help.
